Background of the study
social media has become a driving force behind linguistic change, particularly in dynamic societies like Nigeria. Platforms such as Facebook and Instagram are at the forefront of this transformation, where users actively shape language through interactive posts, comments, and multimedia content (Ibrahim, 2023). In Nigeria, these digital platforms facilitate the rapid spread of new expressions, idioms, and even grammatical constructions that reflect evolving social identities and cultural influences. This study investigates the impact of digital movements on linguistic change by examining trends on Facebook and Instagram. It explores how collective online behavior contributes to language evolution, highlighting factors such as user engagement, visual cues, and community feedback. By comparing the language practices on these platforms, the research aims to document the processes through which digital communication drives linguistic innovation and transforms traditional language norms (Okafor, 2024). The study contributes to the broader understanding of how modern communication technologies affect language in a globalized world.

Statement of the problem
Although there is considerable evidence that social media drives linguistic change, research specifically examining this phenomenon in Nigeria is limited. Most existing studies focus on isolated instances of language innovation, without providing a comparative analysis of platforms like Facebook and Instagram (Chukwu, 2023). This gap limits our understanding of the mechanisms through which digital movements influence language evolution and the implications for traditional linguistic practices. Without targeted research, the nuanced effects of social media on language remain underexplored (Ibrahim, 2023).

Objectives of the study

  1. To document linguistic changes driven by digital movements on Facebook and Instagram.
  2. To compare language practices across these platforms.
  3. To assess the implications of digital-driven linguistic change on traditional language norms.

Research questions

  1. How does social media drive linguistic change in Nigerian online communities?
  2. What differences exist between Facebook and Instagram language practices?
  3. What are the broader implications for traditional language structures?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it offers a comprehensive analysis of how social media movements on Facebook and Instagram influence linguistic change in Nigeria. The findings will benefit linguists, educators, and policymakers by providing insights into the digital transformation of language and guiding effective language planning strategies (Ibrahim, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study
Limited to analyzing language trends on Facebook and Instagram among Nigerian users; it does not cover other platforms or offline communication.

Definitions of terms

  • Linguistic Change: Evolution of language through new expressions and structures.
  • Digital Movements: Collective online actions that influence language and culture.
  • Social Media: Online platforms facilitating interactive communication.
